Americans urge new congress to focus on health insurance…….

“the survey found that 80 percent of adults want Congress and state legislatures to do more to extend access to coverage.

While Americans express broad support for a stronger health care safety net, a commanding majority of Americans favor reforms that build on the current public-private system rather than implementing a new government-run system.

“Americans across the political spectrum are saying that government should take action to improve access to health care coverage, but they do not support a one-size-fits-all approach,” said Dr. Whitfield Ayres, President of Ayres, McHenry & Associates. “Promoting access to health care coverage is an issue Americans agree on regardless of party or ideology.”

“Voters clearly want Congress to find a way to promote access and to ensure the government devotes the resources necessary to help working families get the coverage they need,….”  Congress Focuses on Health Insurance

Mattel to recall Polly Pocket Toys

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

This action covers a recall of 4.4 million toys

Mattel Inc. will recall about 4.4 million Polly Pocket doll and accessory sets after three children had to undergo surgery after swallowing magnets from the sets, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday.

All three suffered intestinal perforations that required surgery, the commission said.

Notice of the recall came the same day that the U.S. Public Interest Research Group called for warning labels on toys with magnets.

“If a child swallows more than one magnet they can attract to each other in the body and cause intestinal blockage,” said research group Director Alison Cassady in Washington.

The group said the Consumer Product Safety Commission should require a warning label on all magnetic toys that tells parents to seek immediate medical attention if a child swallows magnets….. Recall

Sales of existing homes fell in 38 states during the summer, led by steep declines in Nevada, Arizona, Florida and California, as the once-booming housing market showed further signs of a steep slowdown.

The National Association of Realtors reported that sales dipped to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 6.27 million units nationwide, down by 12.7 percent from the same period a year ago.

The declines were the largest in once-booming areas of the country. Sales fell by 38 percent in Nevada, 36 percent in Arizona; 34.2 percent in Florida and 28.6 percent in California.

In all, nine states had sales declines in the summer of 20 percent or more compared to the third quarter of 2005.

The weakness in sales also affected prices with 45 metropolitan areas experiencing price declines, according to a separate survey the Realtors did of 148 metropolitan areas.

If buyers take heart from the decline in mortgage rates and step up to buy, the backlog of unsold homes could shrink quickly — especially with the production of new homes having abruptly fallen. That would put the market back on sound footing within a few months. On the other hand, if potential customers decide that an investment in housing is “dead money” because home prices are going to flatten or decline for an extended period, then no jiggering of interest rates is going to encourage them to part with their down payments…..Mortgage Rates
