Flood Insurance

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

“Anywhere it can rain, it can flood. If you live on a hill or in an area that has never been flooded, you may still be at some level of risk.

Flooding can be caused by heavy rains, melting snow, inadequate drainage systems, failed flood control structures such as levees and dams, as well as tropical storms and hurricanes. It is important to understand the flood risks you face before deciding whether to purchase flood insurance……” Floodsmart.gov

Kentucky Insurance Tips , Response to Storms

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Here are some good tips on how to respond after the storm, once your claim has been reported:

“Most policies cover tree removal if the tree falls on a covered structure. If your neighbor’s tree falls on your property and damages a covered structure or vehicle, your insurance policy covers your loss.
- Read your policy carefully. Many policies do not offer coverage for food spoilage if the electrical outage took place off premises.
- When the adjuster arrives, ask for identification. Get the adjuster’s name, a local phone number and the company he/she represents. Ask questions and take detailed notes.
- Broken glass or other damage to your car is covered if you have comprehensive coverage. You are not covered if you only have liability insurance.
- When having repairs completed, deal only with reputable, licensed and insured local contractors you know or can check out. Don’t deal with “fly-by-night” remodelers who go door-to-door, especially those offering greatly reduced prices.
- Contact DOI at (800) 595-6053 and ask for a copy of “After the Storm Has Passed.” This publication includes valuable information, a complaint form and information on how to prepare for the next disaster. The publication is available online at http://doi.ppr.ky.gov/kentucky/Documents/pubs/AfterTheStorm060408.pdf ……”  Insurance Journal

September National Preparedness Month

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

“National Preparedness Month is an important reminder about each American’s civic responsibility to prepare for emergencies,” said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. “Those with the capacity and wherewithal to help themselves must do so in advance, so that in the event of an emergency, responders can first assist those who are unable to tend to themselves. From wildfires and earthquakes in California, to hurricanes and tropical storms along the Gulf Coast, to flooding in the Midwest, recent events remind us more than ever that we must prepare ourselves and our families for a disaster.  This is the time, each year, when every American should ask the question, ‘Am I ready?’”

The Ready Campaign and Citizen Corps (www.citizencorps.gov) are encouraging individuals across the nation to take important preparedness steps that will greatly improve their ability to survive and recover from all types of emergencies, whether natural or man-made.  These steps include getting an emergency supply kit, making a family emergency plan, becoming informed about the different emergencies that may affect them, and getting involved in community preparedness and response efforts. ….”

Are your small electronics covered by homeowners insurance?

Monday, December 31st, 2007

According to the findings by TRC, an independent research company based in Fort Washington, Pa., 60 percent of those contacted believe small electronic items, if stolen from their home or auto, are covered by their policies or don’t know if they are.

More than half of the respondents—55 percent—wrongly believe their electronic equipment is covered if it is damaged or destroyed by a power surge.

Forty-two percent believe damage to their property from home installation or loading and/or unloading in transport is covered. Only one-third—35 percent—think their digital downloads, such as iTunes or podcasts, are covered, while 34 percent believe gift cards—regardless of value—are covered.” Electronics and your Homeowners Insurance Policy
