Memorial Day Drivers - Sleep Alert

Monday, May 14th, 2007

From the National Sleep Foundation:

America’s highways will soon be bumper to bumper with road-tripping vacationers eager to enjoy their favorite Memorial Day vacation spots. Sadly, many drivers will hit the road without having had enough sleep, oblivious to the dangers of drowsy driving. Since Memorial Day kicks off the beginning of the summer vacation season, which according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is the deadliest time of year for drivers, the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) reminds the public to stay alert at the wheel and beware of other sleepy drivers in order to arrive at their destinations safely…..

health insurance premiums rising in KY

Health Insurance Premiums rising in Kentucky from Lexington Herald Leader

For workers in Kentucky, insurance premiums are rising much faster than their earnings, resulting in smaller paychecks, a Washington-based consumer health organization reported Monday.

Families USA said premiums rose by 68.3 percent since 2000 while earnings increased by 17.6 percent.

“Kentucky families have been hit hard in the pocketbooks due to skyrocketing health costs and stagnant wages,” said Ron Pollack, executive director of the nonprofit group. “As a result, Kentuckians are paying much larger portions of their paychecks on health care, and health care is becoming less and less affordable.”....Kentucky Access

The Internal Revenue Service’s criminal case numbers in mortgage fraud have been doubling every two years through the first half of this decade….. Real Estate

Mattel to recall Polly Pocket Toys

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

This action covers a recall of 4.4 million toys

Mattel Inc. will recall about 4.4 million Polly Pocket doll and accessory sets after three children had to undergo surgery after swallowing magnets from the sets, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday.

All three suffered intestinal perforations that required surgery, the commission said.

Notice of the recall came the same day that the U.S. Public Interest Research Group called for warning labels on toys with magnets.

“If a child swallows more than one magnet they can attract to each other in the body and cause intestinal blockage,” said research group Director Alison Cassady in Washington.

The group said the Consumer Product Safety Commission should require a warning label on all magnetic toys that tells parents to seek immediate medical attention if a child swallows magnets….. Recall
